Snapshots from the Lichenocene

WORDS + IMAGES: SOPHIA RIZZOLO

Viewed together, these five images ask us to consider what relationships lichens have with the world around them. What does it mean for rhizines (the small root-like structures seen in Untitled 2) to affix themselves to plastic? What does it mean to live together on a branch alongside fungi and other microorganisms? These questions become ever more important as we consider issues of pollution, species loss, and climate survival. Together, these images offer a speculative view of the Lichenocene.
